I’ve always been overwhelmed by the amount of founders and entrepreneurs that’ve expressed the need for a better way to finance their businesses, especially during the uncertain times of the pandemic. Even more overwhelming is the moment you realize you’ve built that solution. Never underestimate the power of that “ah-ha” moment. So inspired and humbled by our customers I had to bring their reactions to life - cue the ‘Ah-Ha’ campaign. At Pipe we’ve had over >1,000+ customers sign up in < 6 months and their pure excitement for upfront non-dilutive capital is hard to ignore. A tick over 12 months ago I met an extraordinary man named Sam Baker. After serving in the Marine Corps and achieving a hugely successful professional career, Sam, a passionate storyteller, became a children’s book author at age 95. His stories creatively feature important life lessons and values such as kindness, inclusivity, and friendship, lessons he learned growing up in the Mississippi Delta. “My books are always about accepting people, no matter who they are or what they look like,” he said. Today, I’m proud to share Sam Baker, now 99 years old, is sharing his valuable life lessons with the world featuring in Canva's ‘With love’ Holiday campaign. Sam’s number-one piece of advice? “No matter what, be kind, because at the end of the day we’re all more similar than you think.” It’s been a treat to bring this to life with a superstar team — enormous thanks to Kieran McConnell Indah shillingford Dimitri Kalagas Gina Talboys Christina Guo Brony Popp Lydia Sarks Morgan Ruth M. Connecting with our community and uncovering their inspirational stories is one of the best parts of my role at Canva. And it is with much joy that I share this recent find featuring Jess Ekstrom, the 30-year-old CEO and founder of Headbands of Hope, a business she created out of her dorm as a junior in college. For every headband sold, one is donated to a child with an illness. To date, Headbands of Hope has donated over one million headbands to children in need. Jess tells me she calls it “the dumbest-smartest moment of my life”. As a one-woman show building a business, Canva became the go-to tool to empower Jess to create social media posts, videos, thank you cards, and more, “spreading hope” to sick children and their families. Today, she employs staff right across the U.S. and runs her business from the road, living in her Airstream with her husband, Jake, and their pooch, Ollie. She says Canva’s real-time collaboration features enable her to work remotely and lead her team while “living the entrepreneurial dream”.
