Juneteenth commemorates the day in 1865 when federal troops arrived in Galveston, Texas to ensure that all remaining enslaved people were freed—a full two and a half years after the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation. Newly freed Black people celebrated the occasion, and in the following year, created the annual celebration featuring music, food, and prayer on June 19th known under a variety of names such as Jubilee Day, Emancipation Day, and now, Juneteenth. Today, Airtable commemorates the holiday while acknowledging that the celebrations of the past & present do not obfuscate that the maintenance of slavery for years following Emancipation serves as another reminder of the institutionalized oppression Black people have, and continue to face in this country.
