Here is a quick primer on the PCI Data Security Standard (PCI-DSS): 💳The PCI Security Standards are technical and operational requirements set by the PCI Security Standards Council (PCI SSC) to protect cardholder data. The Council is responsible for managing the security standards, while compliance with the PCI set of standards is enforced by the founding members of the Council: American Express, Discover Financial Services, JCB, MasterCard and Visa Inc. 💳The standards apply to all entities that store, process or transmit cardholder data. 💳The standard is made up of six "goals" which are then broken down into 12 "requirements": Build and Maintain a Secure Network and Systems 1️⃣Install and maintain a firewall configuration to protect cardholder data 2️⃣Do not use vendor-supplied defaults for system passwords and other security parameters Protect Cardholder Data 3️⃣Protect stored cardholder data 4️⃣Encrypt transmission of cardholder data across open, public networks Maintain a Vulnerability Management Program 5️⃣Protect all systems against malware and regularly update antivirus software or programs 6️⃣Develop and maintain secure systems and applications Implement Strong Access Control Measures 7️⃣Restrict access to cardholder data by business need to know 8️⃣Identify and authenticate access to system components 9️⃣Restrict physical access to cardholder data Regularly Monitor and Test Networks 1️⃣0️⃣Track and monitor all access to network resources and cardholder data 1️⃣1️⃣Regularly test security systems and processes Maintain an Information Security Policy 1️⃣2️⃣Maintain a policy that addresses information security for all personnel 💳The PCI SSC sets the PCI Security Standards, but each payment card brand has its own program for compliance, validation levels and enforcement. 💳A merchant is defined as any entity that accepts payment cards bearing the logos of any of the five members of PCI SSC (American Express, Discover, JCB, MasterCard or Visa) as payment for goods and/or services. Merchants will fall into one of four levels based on the number of credit card transactions processed for each payment brand. The level will determine which PCI-DSS validation methods are required. 💳A Service Provider is a business entity that is not a payment brand, directly involved in the processing, storage, or transmission of cardholder data on behalf of another entity. This also includes companies that provide services that control or could impact the security of cardholder data. Service Providers are required to complete SAQ-D or have a QSA perform an audit and complete a ROC. 💳Qualified Security Assessors (QSA) are approved by the Council to assess compliance with PCI. Approved Scanning Vendors (ASV) are approved by the Council to validate adherence to the PCI DSS scan requirements by performing vulnerability scans of Internet-facing environments.

Since the launch of Copilot technical preview last year, I’ve been in awe of what AI can do to help developers write code easier and stay in the flow. Starting today, I’m thrilled to say that GitHub Copilot is generally available to individual developers. Just like the rise of compilers and open source, AI will change the fundamental nature of software as we know it. But most importantly, I believe it will make developers everywhere happier.
