Abortion is healthcare, and healthcare is an employee wellness issue as well as.. you know… a human right. The truth is, people will die as a result of the Supreme Court’s decision. But seeing as this is LinkedIn it’s worth reminding us all that abortion is a core economic issue and safe access to abortion is critical for any industry or company to thrive. When someone is forced into parenthood, their options become more limited. Creativity is limited, innovation is limited, the options companies have for a diverse and vibrant hiring pipeline is limited. Their options for career planning are limited. So abortion is very much an economic issue and restricted access to abortion in turn restricts the potential for employee wellness, happiness and by extension company growth. Without access to abortion, closing the gender wage and promotion gap becomes impossible. There can be no equality without abortion. Abortion affects everyone. Data shows that young men whose partners cannot access abortion are 4x more likely to drop out of high school and 2x more likely to drop out of college. About 60% of women who have abortions already have one child and one of the primary reasons they choose abortion is due to being able to provide for the family they already have. So regardless of how you feel about abortion, you should very much care about how restricting access affects your employees and your company’s potential.
